Conference on Women for a Better Tomorrow
The Women's Commission organised a large-scale Conference on 10-11 May 2002 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with the theme "Women for a Better Tomorrow" to generate public discussion and raise public awareness of gender-related issues, and to bring international perspectives of women's issues to the local scene. The Honourable Tung Chee-hwa, Chief Executive, officiated the Opening Ceremony on 10 May. The Conference, which included informal networking sessions, plenary sessions and breakout sessions, was attended by international speakers and more than 500 local participants. There was discussion on the three priority areas of work of the Women's Commission. In addition, more than 30 non-governmental organisations took part in the Conference's Marketplace where their work was showcased. Over 70 community activities with a focus on women were held around the territory by various women's groups, service organisations and government departments. The Conference had provided very good opportunity for the Commission and women's groups to establish partnership.
