Appointment to Women's Commission

The Government today (5 January) announced the appointment of two new members and the re-appointment of two incumbent members to Women's Commission (WoC). All appointments are for three years with effect from 15 January 2007.

Two incumbent members, Ms Chau Chuen-heung and Ms Ko Po-ling, have been re-appointed for three years. Ms Chau and Ms Ko have served on the Commission since January 2004, and contributed to the promotion of further advancement of women in Hong Kong.

The two new members are Ms Ayesha Abbas MacPherson and Mr Christopher Law Kin-chung.

Ms MacPherson is a Partner of KPMG and the Deputy Chairman of the Community Services Committee of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She is committed to serving the community particularly for the promotion of the status of women and has actively participated in previous WoC activities.

Mr Law is an architect by profession, and he is the Director of Oval Partnership Ltd. He is a member of the Commission on Strategic Development and the Social Worker Registration Board. Mr Law is actively serving the community through participation in the welfare sector.

The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, welcomed the appointment of the two new members and the re-appointment of the two incumbent members. He looked forward to their contribution to the work for promoting the well-being and interests of women in Hong Kong.

Dr Chow also thanked the two outgoing members, Ms Ophelia Cheung and Mr Ng Sui-kou, for their valuable contribution and dedication to the work of the Commission during their term of appointment.

The WoC was set up on 15 January 2001, as a high-level central mechanism which takes a strategic overview of women's issue. It plays a 2 strategic role in advising the government on policies and initiatives which are of concern to women.
