The Women's Commission's Exhibition entitled: "Women of Hong Kong - A Century of Contribution and Development"
The Women's Commission is organising an exhibition entitled "Women of Hong Kong - A Century of Contributions and Development" from 30 November to 3 December 2007 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This exhibition is a key public education initiative of the Women's Commission, and also the finale of the series of events under "Colorful Lives of Women" in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR.
The exhibition aims at displaying significant experiences of women in Hong Kong during different periods of time, in the areas of work, family, education and participation in the society, as well as presenting to the public the history of Hong Kong women's development in various aspects and enhancing gender awareness of the public. The Exhibition not only reflects the development and contribution of women in Hong Kong, but also presents the cultural life of local girl-child and the images and profiles of the first woman in different occupations and areas of achievement.
The exhibition consists of four zones, namely, "Stories of Women", "The First Women in …", "Key Achievements in Promoting Local Women's Rights and Interests", and "The Cultural Life of Girl-child". There will also be parallel events, including a variety of talks by women celebrities and performances by women's groups, on 1 and 2 December 2007.
Mrs Selina Tsang, Wife of the Chief Executive, Madam Liu Hai-rong, Vice President of the All-China Women's Federation, Madam Guo Li, Deputy Director, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Madam Zhang Jing-ya, Mrs Lu Xing-hua, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR, and Mr Matthew Cheung, Secretary for Labour and Welfare officiated at the exhibition's opening ceremony on 29 November 2007.
Sophia Kao, Chairperson of the Women's Commission said "Over the past century, Hong Kong has evolved from a fishing village to a cosmopolitan city, and women have played an important part in the process." "It's been a long road to promote and achieve gender equality. With the concerted efforts of different sectors of the community, in particular the local women's groups, we have made significant progress. In the face of different challenges in the 21st century, we must sustain our efforts in eliminating and transforming gender prejudices and stereotyping, and promoting mutual respect between the genders in our community, joining hands in building a harmonious society in Hong Kong."
