List of policy and programme areas that have applied the Gender Mainstreaming Checklist

In the 2015 Policy Address, the Chief Executive accepted the recommendations of the Commission that, starting from 1 April 2015, all bureaux and departments should be required to refer to the checklist and apply gender mainstreaming to formulating major government policies and initiatives.

Before the comprehensive implementation of gender mainstreaming in formulating major government policies and initiatives, the Government has applied the Gender Mainstreaming Checklist (the Checklist) to over 50 specific policy areas or programmes. Apart from adopting the Checklist, more and more government officers have also applied the gender mainstreaming concept in the course of their daily work, taking into account the needs and perspectives of both genders.

In March 2015, the Commission published Gender Mainstreaming Guidebook helps government officers understand more about gender mainstreaming and enhance their gender sensitivity. It will facilitate their application of gender mainstreaming at work, so that public policies and services can take proper account of the needs and concerns of both women and men.

With the assistance of the Commission, the Labour and Welfare Bureau has enhanced the promotion of gender mainstreaming within the Government with view to providing incentives for bureaux and departments to apply gender mainstreaming to their work. The Commission launched the Gender Mainstreaming Award in 2012-13 to recognise the efforts of government bureaux and departments in promoting gender mainstreaming and to encourage them to further apply the Checklist their work. An award presentation ceremony cum exhibition on gender mainstreaming was held in March 2013 the participation of the Gender Focal Points to showcase successful applications of gender mainstreaming.

The Commission will continue to work closely with the Government, assisting in institutionalising the Checklist in the policy decision-making process in the Government and promoting its application outside the Government in order to mainstream gender equality in the society.
